In March 2005, Apple released Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger CD Version (*.DMG) as a free download from the Mac App Store. The release included all the features of the version available for purchase at time of release and continued to be offered for sale up until June 2006 when it was retired from the store and replaced by Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger DVD Version (*.iso). This file contains a pre-installed copy of Mac OS X 10.4 with a CD-ROM that includes disk images for installation on PowerPC or Intel Macintosh computers, as well as instructions for installing on PowerPC systems without an optical drive (DVD+/-RW) or with an Intel processor (iDVD). Included with this release is a set of utilities to assist in the process of installing from a CD. As bootable from the optical disc, Tiger allows for full installation on computers with no bootable media or without battery-backed memory. In contrast, the ability to boot from a DVD requires at least two optical discs – one for installing and another for burning – and works only with recent MacBooks and MacBook Airs with Superdrive support.Initial release version shipped on a single, double-sided floppy disk labelled "Mac OS X 10.4" only, although a "Jenga" version was also released on two double-sided floppies labelled "Mac OS X 10.4 Jenga". Initial version was also offered on a single CD-ROM, with no DVD-ROM counterpart. The initial release version was sold at a recommended retail price of US$129 for the CD and $129 for the DVD. It seems that this was an attempt to make it more attractive for users of Intel-based Macs, which would not be able to install Tiger from this CD/DVD set.In a change from the previous release, a DVD box set was also made available with a retail price of US$79. This release included both Tiger CD and Tiger DVD, two DVDs with the latest update of Apple's iLife '05 software, and one DVD with iWork '05 software. This was released in an apparent attempt to better compete with Microsoft Office 2004 Standard Edition, which was released at the same time. The included DVD is in fact a re-release of Apple's free iLife '04 "Starter Edition" DVD, which can be downloaded from Apple's website. Some reviewers have questioned why this update to the Starter Edition was not released for free on Apple's website as it had been in previous years. On March 26, 2006 Apple officially retired the CD and DVD releases of Tiger, and discontinued the retail box set. The disc is still available from Apple's website as a free download for qualifying Mac OS X users. The pre-release version, which was released on June 24, 2005 as "Mac OS X 10.4 RC" at $129 for the CD and $79 for the DVD, included much of the same software as the final release (except Spotlight and QuickTime 7), but was still missing:After reviewing Apple's intention to discontinue Tiger's CD and DVD sets, Computerworld reported that "Apple has said it plans to release a new version of its Mac OS X 10. cfa1e77820
